This is the Tamiya 1/48 Douglas A-1J Skyraider US Air Force of the 56th Special Operation Wing, 602nd Fighter Squadron No.029 bird operating from Thailand in 1969. As Jason Koh explains:
We start the feature with a close up of the pilot which while decent enough is a bit soft on the details.
Tamiya provided decals for the instrument panel dials which is good enough when supplemented with some careful detail painting. Little can be seen once the fuselage goes on together.
Fit in most areas is good that it is enough to apply cement and sand the seams.
Landing gear assembly.
The camo pattern is applied using tracing paper with some masking tape beneath to lift up the tracing paper for a defined but softer edge. The more lift away from the surface, the softer the camo edge will be. Camouflage colours from Gunze Mr color range are (309) Green FS34079, (303) Green FS4102, (310) Brown FS30219, (311) Gray FS36622 plus some white and flesh for highlights and Tamiya smoke for shadow tones
Faded weathering, tones, stains and streaking was done with oils and enamel paints. Panel lines were applied with Gunze Mr Weathering enamel wash.
The characteristic exhaust stain was applied by spraying a layer of dark yellow and white surrounded by flat black and followed by application of pigments for effect
The completed masterpiece.
Many thanks Jason.
