1/32 Wingnut Wings Felixstowe F2A Early : by Kevin Fong

The Wingnut Wings Felixstowe F2A Early kit (ref:32050)  released in 2014 is a monster of a kit in terms of finesse, class and sheer size. You will need guts of steel and a lot of experience building big scaled planes to attempt this kit, which Kevin Fong is never short of and have years of, evident from all his fantastic planes that graced the past exhibition hall and competitions in Malaysia.

It took him a mere 5 months to finish the model which went together perfectly; but a lot of extra bits have been added to make this a masterclass build. Even the interior which will hardly been seen was added with a lot of love and care with interior wood painting done in oils and cables and rigging with monofilament fishing line painted with Sharpie silver. Turnbuckles were made from brass tubes of OD 0.5mm/ID 0.3mm while photo etch eyelets came from Brengun. Lets just say many nights were spent just on these eyelets...

All the exterior works receive decals from Aviattic (linen effect decals); PC10 for green areas and CDL for other linen colors with a lot of preparation work to ensure the surfaces were pristine to receive decals of such sizes. Preshading and postshading was done to give them the scaled effect and contrast with a rich tonal quality. Exterior wood panels were decals from Ucshi.

An experiment well done was the black bitumen simulation competed with clever use of PVA glue, which produced the crack effect over aged wood when dry. The decals worked well with Mr Mark Softer and some stubborn areas received a good 'spanking' of commercial thinners. Not for beginners though...

The finished model graced the competition halls of Malcom 2017 and went home with a well deserved GOLD. We hope to see more of Kevin's works and a little bird chirped that either a Panzer or a pesky Mosquito is hanging around his worktop....
