[Trumpeter] C47A Skytrain

The C47A Skytrain offer by Trumpeter comes in 1:48 scale.

The kit contains 338 parts and the completed model measures 405mm long and 604mm wide. This will require a huge display case. The boxart shows "Kilroy is here" which was active in June 1944 during D-Day.

The instruction sheet is broken down into 23 steps and gives a full layout of the sprue parts:

  • main fuselage
  • bottom wing and stabilisers
  • top wing and stabilisers
  • engine
  • central wing and nacelle
  • flaps and tail
  • props and wheels
  • fuselage interior
  • interior parts
  • cockpit parts
  • clear parts
  • 1 PE fret
  • 1 set of rubber tyres ( 2 front, 1 back)
  • 1 cockpit dial film
  • 1 decal sheet
  • 1 painting instruction sheet with 2 optional markings ( D-Day and Market Garden)

The quality of the mould is typically Trumpeter and the interior details are more than adequate. PE parts are aplenty for the seatbelts and fine panels. The cockpit and console is well detailed with a clear part and film back to give it good textures. Most of it will not be seen though because of the small canopy glazing. Some cutouts will be required if you want to show the interior in its full glory.

Onto the wings, the flaps and stabilisers can be modelled in any position. The ribbing quality is quite convincing in scale.

The radial engines are adequate and will require extra tubing and pipes to complete the picture. Like all radial engines, its difficult to clean up any misalignment of the top and bottom mould and Trumpeter's kit suffer from some slight misalignment. Other than that, ejector pin marks and flash is not a major problem. Their presence and location is either obscure or will be easy to clean up.

One small disappointment is the wheels have no option in the flight position though I am sure this can be modified.

Overall, this is a very nice kit and welll worth the wait. Trumpeter's Skytrain can be obtained from Miniature Hobby in PJ.
