This is the first of a series of articles to feature local hobby shop and enterprises in Malaysia related to fine scale modelling. We hope that these features will be useful for those who have been searching in vain for the 'local watering holes' in the country.
Getting To Know Your Friendly Local Hobby Store – Hobby HQ.
A long standing establishment in the local scale modelling scene, Hobby HQ (HHQ) which is situated on the 3rd. Floor of City Square in Kuala Lumpur is a familiar name and fixture for many local modelers. Started in the late 1980’s when the shop was found on a different floor but within the same building it has been since 2002 run by Mr. Low, the brother of the founder.
A Look Inside
Hemmed in on 3 of its 4 sides by a glass frontage, a first-time visitor is greeted with an impressive, floor to ceiling display of finished model kits which range from planes, AFVs, figures, ships as well as boxes and boxes of model kits of various scales and makes. Stepping inside one will find the inside differing little from the exterior as almost all the shelves not to mention every nook and cranny well stocked with model kits, paints, modelling accessories, aftermarket products and parts and books. Mr. Low can usually be found behind the counter at the nerve center of the shop.
One could say the shop has a little of everything and more of some. HHQ caters to plane, armored vehicles, ships, figures, dioramas, cars, bikes and even sci-fi enthusiasts although HHQ prefers to complement rather than compete with the offerings by other LHS. With a bit of searching and a bit of luck one may even find a rare gem of a kit from the past thus a thorough scan especially for first time visitors is highly recommended. HHQ will cater to specific requests as well from customers provided the product is available with their suppliers.
Operational Hours / Address / Contact
HHQ is open from Monday to Saturday between 11am to 7pm and occasionally on Sunday, usually upon request.
