This is a review of the Airfix Special Edition Mayflower kit in 1:96 scale.
Measuring 320mm length with a part count of 125, this Special Edition Mayflower kit comes ready with a rigging tool and 6 figures to populate the ship.
The Mayflower was the ship which the American Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth in 1620. Built in the end of the 16th Century, there is no actual record of the size so the kit is at best a guesstimate of its length. She took 67 days to cross the Atlantic covering 3500 miles.
Moulded in brown plastic, this Airfix kit is showing its age as it was first released in 1972 but not as a special Edition kit with the rigging tools. Details are raised panels and the part fit will require some putty. Some flash is evident but should not be too problematic. Ejector pin marks on the rowing boats will need some putty work as they are located on the visible side of the part.
The instruction sheets are adequate, giving a brief introduction of the subject and a 20 part construction sequence, starting from the hull and ending at the paint guide. Only Humbrol paint guides are given true to Airfix's policy. There is no paint guide for the mast and top deck, so a bit of research here will be needed.
The quality of the flags are a little disappointing. The more industrious ones may want to redo those.
Overall, there seems to be just adequate enough to pull off a convincing Mayflower kit. Going in the region of USD30-40 around the internet shops, this review kit was obtained from HHQ in KL.
